Berg Propulsion CPP

The Secret Behind CPP Reliability

Ever heard the expression, “It’s what’s inside that counts”? For a vessel’s controllable pitch propeller (CPP), it is more fitting than it may first appear.

When we think of marine propulsion, we often picture the propeller. For good reason. It is large, powerful, and central to generating thrust.

But inside the vessel, out of sight, the hydraulic system is doing the work that makes reliable and precise pitch control of the propeller possible. Without it, the CPP cannot do what it is engineered to do.

The hydraulic system is what enables the blades to respond quickly and precisely, again and again, even in the most demanding operating conditions.

Reliability begins from within.

Reliable Performance Over Time

For vessel operators, consistency is key. A propulsion system must provide reliable performance over time, across changing operating conditions, and over long service intervals.

Reliability is essential to maximizing vessel uptime. But in a CPP hydraulic system, it depends on more than robust design. It also depends on maintaining the right internal conditions that allow components to keep performing as intended.

External elements entering the oil, such as water or particles, can affect the components inside the hydraulic system over time. Maintaining clean oil helps ensure optimum operating conditions, supporting reliable pitch control and long service life.

Clean Oil Supports Long-Term Reliability

At the heart of CPP hydraulics is the oil within the system, and more importantly, the quality of that oil. It not only enables blade pitch adjustment, but it also lubricates critical components. In Berg Propulsion’s CPP hydraulic systems, this lubrication is continuous and independent of pitch actuation — meaning that components remain lubricated even when pitch is not actively being adjusted.

Oil quality should therefore not be treated as another “routine detail.” It deserves the same attention as the propeller itself.

Maintaining good oil quality supports:

  • effective lubrication
  • precise pitch control
  • reduced component wear
  • long-term hydraulic reliability

Oil Condition Monitoring for Continuous Insight

While sample analysis remains a valuable way of assessing oil quality, it only shows the condition of the oil at a specific point in time.

In a CPP hydraulic system, conditions can change rapidly. By monitoring oil condition continuously, rather than relying on periodic sampling alone, operators gain earlier visibility into contamination.

This is where Berg Propulsion adds important value. Our Oil Condition Monitoring system (OCM) provides real-time insight into lubricant quality, including water saturation measurement — giving operators a level of visibility that not all OCM systems provide.

Turning Insight into Action

With the insight gained from monitoring current oil conditions, operators can make informed decisions about how and when to maintain the hydraulic system, rather than relying on guesswork or fixed schedules.

Berg Propulsion also offers dedicated systems for offline filtration, designed to remove moisture, particles, and oil degradation products from the system. By improving oil longevity, offline filtration supports both component reliability and long-term hydraulic performance.

The Importance of Looking Inwards

The propeller may be the most recognizable symbol of any vessel. But when it comes to controllable pitch propellers, reliable performance depends just as much on what happens inside the system.

“By combining Oil Condition Monitoring, water saturation measurement, and offline filtration, Berg Propulsion helps operators maximize vessel uptime. The propeller may be the most visible part of CPP propulsion, but even the star of the show needs the right hydraulic system behind it to shine,” says Filip Eliasson, Product Manager of Main Propellers at Berg Propulsion.
