The Twin Fin propulsion concept is an innovative system which increases uptime, fuel efficiency, and flexibility for new builds and existing vessels when compared to conventional alternatives.

BERG Propulsion, with the support of Odense Maritime Technology as a technology provider, developed the compact Twin Fin design based on well-proven and robust components.

Either as new builds or ultrafast, uncomplicated retrofits on existing azimuth-fitted vessels, the system was initially aimed at vessels with diesel-electric propulsion facing the harshest demands. But there was always potential for more — including the recent direct electric drive propulsion system.

Reliability and Efficiency

Twin Fin can be tailored to almost any vessel thanks to the flexibility in designing and positioning the two fins. Placed side by side, the two separate propulsion units consist of controllable pitch propellers mounted similar to single-screw vessels with an aft bulb. 

Twin Fin gives higher thrust and requires lower input power, since you can use a larger propeller diameter running with a low shaft speed and because there are minimal mechanical losses.

Hydrodynamically designed fins ensure homogenous water flow to the propellers for lower fuel consumption plus lower emissions and noise radiation.

The compartment is easily accessible from inside the hull for inspection and service. The reduction gearbox and electric motor(s) or direct drive permanent magnet motor, as well as stern tube inner sealing, can be exchanged through the deck above — ideal for remote areas like the Arctic.

With the motor placed in the fins rather than in the hull, there is extra cargo space, buoyancy, and therefore extra deadweight.

Components and techniques are well proven in the harshest environments and can be tailored to any vessel design thanks to the flexibility in designing and positioning the fins.

With all moving parts inside the hull, Twin Fin has proven itself unparalleled when it comes to reliability. The fins protect the propulsion system and can also be fitted with ice knives.

With the TwinFin propulsion system, two azimuth thrusters are replaced on the Polarcus Naila, resulting in lower noise, higher reliability, and 30% less fuel consumption at the same bollard pull.
