Berg Propulsion Expands Strategic Collaboration with Jiangsu Dajin Industry to Enhance Options for Chinese Shipbuilding
Hönö, Sweden, 12 May 2025 – Berg Propulsion has formalized an expanded collaboration agreement with China’s Jiangsu Dajin Industry Co. Ltd, reinforcing a close partnership just weeks after being named the shipyard’s ‘Supplier of the Year’ for 2024.
This strengthened relationship builds on years of cooperation and mutual trust between the leadership teams at Berg Propulsion and Jiangsu Dajin. Since mid-2021, the companies have collaborated on 69 ship orders. As a subsidiary of Bestway Marine & Energy Technology Co. Ltd, Jiangsu Dajin Industry has become Berg’s most significant shipbuilding client in China.
A signing ceremony was held at Berg’s Shanghai office to mark the agreement, with representatives from Bestway Marine Section, the Consulate General of Sweden, and Business Sweden in attendance. Stefan Sedersten, CEO of Berg Propulsion, remarked: “Jiangsu Dajin Industry is one of our key clients globally. This is another important milestone in this sincere collaboration and Berg looks forward to working closely with Jiangsu Dajin to offer integrated capabilities and move forward together into the future.”
Of the vessels ordered, nearly 60 have been 5,200 dwt and 5,900 dwt multipurpose cargo ships—segments where Berg’s technology is a preferred solution. For these projects, Berg’s supply scope includes the MPP950 main propulsion system, gearbox, shaft alternator, Dynamic Drive, and the MPC800M Remote Control System. In 2023, the partners also completed a 6,600 dwt ro-ro container vessel powered by twin four-stroke engines, equipped with twin controllable pitch propellers, a fuel-optimizing redundant network frequency stabilizer, and Dynamic Drive.
Recently, Berg and Jiangsu Dajin have begun working on a new series of eleven 1,064 TEU container feeder vessels. Each ship will feature the MPP1320 propulsion system, a 6000 mm diameter propeller, and full control systems. These ships represent Jiangsu Dajin’s first entry into box ship construction and will be built at its expanding facilities in Taizhou and Nantong, in addition to the Zhenjiang yard. Berg was selected as the propulsion partner for these gearless, two-stroke engine vessels following a strong endorsement from the shipbuilder.
With propulsion systems supplied from Europe and a growing number of European shipowners among Jiangsu Dajin’s clients, efficient production planning and supply chain coordination have been central to the success of the collaboration. Berg is now exploring opportunities to expand its footprint in China, potentially offering a wider range of its control technologies to local shipbuilders.
Liu Nan, Party Secretary and Managing Director of Bestway Marine Section, shared: “During my visit to Berg’s factory in Sweden in 2023, I was deeply impressed by the plant’s refined management and outstanding products. Today’s signing not only represents the joint effort to build excellence in traditional shipbuilding but also marks the beginning of a new journey toward innovation, leadership, and breakthrough development.”
The success of the partnership was recently celebrated at a ceremony attended by 500 workers, where Berg was officially presented with the ‘Supplier of the Year’ award by Jiangsu Dajin Industry.
Wang Xiaohua, Managing Director – East at Berg Propulsion, added: “There’s a mutual trust between Berg and Jiangsu Dajin, where the natural match between our products and their ships has been nurtured by cooperation, knowledge sharing and flexibility through multiple projects. This is a partnership which proved its resilience in the face of the supply chain challenges set by COVID; its renewal and extension is good news for Chinese shipbuilding and ship owners worldwide.”
