Shaft generators, that can also act as shaft motors, are essential to our custom-made BERG Propulsion ESI propulsion solutions. They meet the needs of generating power from fuel-driven power sources while they can also drive the propulsion system electrically.
Shaft generators generate efficient and reliable electric power to the consumers onboard. This is often referred to as power take out (PTO). During normal operation, they can be powered by the main engine generate power to the grid on board. Or the shaft generator can act as a propulsion motor – boosting main engine power (power take in – PTI). It can also function as a pure electric drive (PEL), or as power take home (PTH) function. Generators and motors can be equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs), allowing them to operate at variable speeds.
