Meet the Minds Behind Berg: HR Team Edition
People Behind the People
Behind every thriving team at Berg Propulsion is a dedicated HR team working to cultivate a strong, inclusive culture where people feel empowered to grow and succeed. We recently had the opportunity to catch up with members of the team to explore what drives them and how their work is actively shaping the culture at Berg.
What’s the HR team’s vision for shaping culture at Berg?
Our vision is to create a culture where people feel safe, engaged, and seen – and where our values are truly visible in our daily work. We want to build an environment where collaboration comes naturally, where people feel encouraged to try new things, and where every employee feels that their contribution matters. Culture shouldn’t just reflect what we say we are – it should be evident in what we actually do together, every day. It’s a shared responsibility across the entire organization – that’s how culture becomes real and alive.
How do you approach attracting and retaining great talent in a global company?
When it comes to retaining talent, much of our work focuses on supporting our managers and leaders in their everyday roles – so they have the best possible conditions to create a positive and sustainable work environment for their teams. We do this by staying close to the business, listening actively, and contributing with both structure and care. Our goal is to create conditions where people want to stay and continue to grow.
We believe that being a truly good employer – in practice, not just on paper – is a key part of both attracting and retaining employees. It’s something we strive for every day, and it shapes how we approach talent attraction.
In this work, we’re happy to collaborate with our Marketing department – for example, through initiatives like this one, where we get the opportunity to highlight who we are through the people and stories within the organization.
We’re proud and grateful that many employees choose to return to us after exploring other workplaces. To us, that’s a strong indication that we’re doing many things right.
What’s one initiative that has had a big impact on employees?
Right now, we’re working on creating a clear structure for performance and development dialogues. The goal is to offer better support to managers while giving more space for individual goals and needs. It’s an initiative that’s in high demand across the organization, and we look forward to getting it properly up and running.
At the same time, we’re in a phase of rapid development, which places high demands on clear communication. We’re focused on supporting our leaders so that they, in turn, can create clarity and security within their teams – by being present, accessible, and communicative. It’s about equipping our leaders to be the kind of leaders employees need in times of change.
How do you support learning and development across functions?
This is an area where we, as a company, know there’s more to be done – but where a lot of exciting things are currently happening. One important step is the recruitment of an Academy Manager who is now building our corporate academy from the ground up. This brings new opportunities to create a clearer structure for learning and development, and we in HR look forward to contributing to that work.
Alongside this, we regularly organize training initiatives and have recently launched the “Leadership Guide” – a practical support tool for managers, offering guidance, advice, and consolidated information.
At the same time, a lot of learning happens organically – through projects, cross-functional collaboration, and knowledge sharing between colleagues. Our role is to strengthen those conditions and build on what already works.
What makes Berg’s team culture special?
Our culture is shaped by a strong sense of pride, history, and shared purpose. With deep roots on an island in the archipelago, there is a unique closeness and team spirit that runs through the organization. Many employees have been with the company for a long time, and there’s a deep knowledge and craftsmanship that is carried forward with care.
There is also genuine pride in our products – knowing that they are found on ships all over the world – and in the legacy that the company represents. While we are growing globally and see the need for stronger communication and alignment, we build on a solid foundation of trust, heritage, and commitment.
What does employee engagement mean to your team?
To us, employee engagement means that every individual feels seen, heard, and valued. It’s about inclusion, clear goals, and feeling that your work has purpose. We don’t believe in one-off efforts – we believe in continuous work, where we measure, talk about, and act on what we see. Engagement is built in everyday moments.
