Berg Propulsion plans global reorganization
9 May 2011 – Berg Propulsion’s production facilities and offices worldwide prepare for reorganization strategy in 2011.

BERG Propulsion has announced that it intends to undergo a reorganization exercise due to lower- than-expected order intake, combined with cancellations during the downturn in the shipbuilding industry.

The proposed strategy will enable BERG to remain competitive and to ensure that it maintains the high quality of its products and services. The plan will be put into action following completion of formalities required and in compliance with all legal requirements in the different operating areas.

The reorganization includes reduction in production capacity and reorganization of other functions to streamline processes. The company plans to adjust its two production facilities along product lines. This shift to highly-specialized production serves to maintain the high quality of Berg’s products and services. Berg will also consolidate the Sales and After Sales operations into operating regions, thereby optimising resources and allowing the company to continue focusing on the needs of their customers.

“These are necessary measures that we have to take to ensure that we remain competitive in this downturn. We will not compromise our quality and we will continue to focus on delivering high Customer Value,” says Aloysius Hendricks, Sales & Marketing Director – East.

Other developments
Plans to expand the company’s product line continue. Berg’s R & D teams, which have always been the cornerstone of their innovation throughout the years, will focus on the continuous improvement and development of existing products as well as new products in order to keep abreast of the increasing level of sophistication currently marking the industry.

Berg Propulsion scores contract with Nostag Gmbh
Berg Propulsion scores contract with Nostag Gmbh

Continuing rising demand for sustainable wind-based energy plants in the North Sea has led Nostag Gmbh to contract Berg Propulsion to upgrade its cable layer, Nostag 10, by equipping the vessel with two azimuthing thrusters.

Nostag, a consortium comprised of German companies Hans Schramm & Sohn GmbH & Co. KG, Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke GmbH (NSW), and Tiefbau GmbH “Unterweser“ (TAGU), has been operating the 92m long Nostag 10 since 2009 as a non-propelled barge, designed to lay cables mainly for offshore wind parks and also to supply island communities with high voltage cables.

With the increasing number of wind park projects in the North Sea, Nostag has decided that the vessel should be converted to provide self-propelled capabilities, to meet the requirement for greater manoeuvrability when carrying out such tasks.

Berg’s package of supply includes two BAT 316 FP type azimuthing thrusters, electric motors and frequency converters. The azimuthing thrusters will be installed on Nostag 10 by Berg engineers during drydocking at a German shipyard next year.

According to Markus Trautmann, General Manager, Berg Propulsion, Germany, “This contract highlights our ability to deliver a complete propulsion package. Nostag selected Berg as a partner mainly because we can deliver comprehensive turnkey solutions, including the electric motor and frequency drive.”

Berg is optimistic that this is just the first of several similar contracts to equip cable layers for offshore wind park projects. The North Sea is a demanding environment for cable layers and the company believes it is well placed to meet the requirements of operators in this particular market. Mr Trautmann adds, “Our products are designed for heavy-duty and continuous operations, and are well suited for the operational profile of Nostag 10 in the North Sea.”

Berg Propulsion selected for United Faith
Berg Propulsion selected for United Faith

Berg Propulsion’s innovative feathering controlled pitch propeller has been selected by
United Faith (Hong Kong) Group subsidiary Celestone Marine Engineering Co. Ltd, as
part of a deal that looks to equip up to four state-of-the-art semi-submersible heavylift
vessels with complete propulsion systems

The deal, which includes firm orders covering two vessels, plus options to equip a further two in
the months ahead, will see installation of combination propulsion systems on each ship, involving
traditional diesel engine plus electrically powered Azimuth driver systems from Berg, the Berg CPP
with feathering capability, two Berg Azimuth Thrusters (BAT), and two Berg CP tunnel thrusters.
The estimated delivery time for the Berg equipment is August 2011.

The 50,000 dwt vessels, construction of which will commence in Nantong, China at the end of
2010, are under China Classification Society class and are rated ICE 1B. They will feature a fully
open stern, DP-2 dynamic positioning capability and optimised ballast tank design. They will be
capable of float-on/float-off, stern load-out and float-over operations.

Wang Xiaohua, General Manager, Berg Propulsion International Trading (Shanghai) Co Ltd, said
that the loading flexibility promised by the design of these ships would likely see them become the
preferred configuration for future semi-submersible construction. “These ships have been
developed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute to address the disadvantages
associated with existing similar-sized semi-submersible vessels, and have been improved in terms
of marine engineering capability, especially in their installation capacity, reliability, efficiency, and
their simplicity of operation and maintenance,” he said.

Mr Wang said the combination of the CPP’s feathering capability and the Berg Azimuth Thruster
would create opportunities for lower operating costs. Putting a propeller in the feathered position
at low speed minimises drag, with consequent fuel savings, he said.

He added that the CPP design to be delivered by Berg would also feature a low oil pressure
solution, specifically developed to ensure lower maintenance costs.

Berg Propulsion secures Astromaritima Navegação contract
Berg Propulsion secures Astromaritima Navegação contract

Berg Propulsion has made a significant new breakthrough into the fast-growing offshore vessel construction market in Brazil, just a few months after establishing a regional office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s shipping capital .

Berg has secured a contract to equip a 64m oil spill response vessel ordered by Astromaritima Navegacao at the Estaleiro Ilha (EISA) shipyard in Rio de Janeiro. Delivery of the vessel, which will operate for the Brazilian oil giant Petrobras, is scheduled towards the end of 2011.

Berg will supply a comprehensive propulsion package to the vessel. This includes both azimuth and tunnel thrusters, all fitted with Berg’s condition monitoring system.

Petrobras has recently announced plans to build over 140 offshore support vessels in order to expand and renew its fleet. The contract at EISA is one of the first to be placed under this multi-million dollar investment programme.

This is the first offshore vessel contract that Berg has secured since establishing its new office in Rio de Janeiro earlier this year, although the company has supplied equipment for numerous vessels of this type worldwide in the past. Project manager Jonas Nyberg says, “This order is highly significant as it shows that within a very short time we have been able to establish a presence in the Brazilian offshore vessel newbuild market, which augurs well for our future prospects. In particular we have established good relations with the Brazilian owners, who selected our offer on the basis of our proven technical expertise in this field and our unrivalled reputation for equipment reliability.”

Berg Propulsion’s new office is situated in downtown Rio de Janeiro, the main centre for offshore and commercial shipping in Brazil. The office will focus on new sales, after sales and service. Mr Nyberg adds, “Apart from selling new equipment our goal is to make sure we have the best service organisation in South America. We are already well on our way to achieving this aim.”

Berg Propulsion wins six vessel order in Ukraine
Berg Propulsion wins six vessel order in Ukraine

21 September, 2010 – Berg Propulsion has secured a significant new reference in Ukraine covering installation of propulsion equipment on board six heavy-duty shallow draft pusher tugboats due delivery to grain trader and ship owner Nibulon S.A.

The vessels, to be built at Ukraine’s Wadan Okean Shipyard, will be ice strengthened for operation in harsh conditions to support transhipment operations, principally in the Dnieper River region. They will be used to steer barges by pushing or towing, service barges and other vessels in port, break ice in the winter, and support mooring operations.

The order covers 13 (12 + spare) Berg Azimuth Thrusters (BAT) with control systems, with vessel deliveries scheduled for December 2010 through February 2011.

Mustafa Müslüm, General Manager for Berg Propulsion Istanbul, said that the very tough conditions in which the vessels would operate meant that the owner had been meticulous in selecting reliable propulsion equipment.

“Vessels operating under such demanding conditions must be specified with the best quality propulsion equipment. Winning this order provides a further endorsement of the durability and track record of our products, as we approach celebrations marking the centenary of Berg, its craftsmanship and industry understanding.”

Herzogenaurach, Germany/Boston, Massachusetts – (April 8, 2010) – PUMA® announced today it will participate in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012 after placing 2nd second overall in the 2008-2009 competition. The race, known as the “Everest of sailing,” begins in October 2011 in Alicante, Spain and ends in Galway, Ireland in June 2012. The eight stopovers in between include: Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya (China), Auckland, Itajaí (Brazil), Miami, Lisbon and Lorient (France).  The PUMA Ocean Racing team will once again be under the leadership of Skipper Ken Read.   PUMA continues to produce and expand their line of sailing performance gear and remains the first Sportlifestyle company to participate in a venture of this kind. PUMA will also be the official supplier of all Volvo Ocean Race merchandise.

“We are proud of PUMA Ocean Racing’s success in the last Volvo Ocean Race and look forward to the adventures this next race will bring,” said Jochen Zeitz, PUMA AG Chairman and CEO. “Both the team and the company hope to leverage the key lessons from the last VOR campaign in order to continue spreading the good will of the program and PUMA worldwide. The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the world's iconic sporting events. It proved to be an extremely successful marketing tool for us and an important launch pad for the sailing product category. We look forward to building the sailing category even more throughout the next race, as well as expanding into other forms of outdoor lifestyle ventures.”

For the 2011-2012 race, PUMA Ocean Racing has proudly partnered with BERG Propulsion, one of the world’s leading designers and producers of Controllable Pitch Propellers for commercial shipping. BERG Propulsion products are designed and engineered with the reduction of adverse environmental impact in mind, striving to bring fuel savings and environmental benefits to every product.  This commitment to sustainability and strive for high performance  makes them a perfect partner for PUMA.   The team will be known as PUMA Ocean Racing, powered by BERG Propulsion.

BergPropulsion_PUMA_OceanRacing

“This is a key addition to our campaign,” stated Antonio Bertone, Chief Marketing Officer, PUMA AG.  “BERG CEO Hakan Svensson and his entire company are a perfect fit with our operation.  As a life-long competitive sailor himself, Hakan understands the sport, the race and how BERG can utilize the race to help build and market their global company.”

Hakan Svensson, Berg Propulsion Chairman and CEO stated "Our company is very excited to be a part of the VOR this year and we are especially proud to have the opportunity to partner with PUMA.  We view the race as a perfect symbol for what Berg Propulsion represents: global perspective and reach, an emphasis on quality, reliability and a desire for excellence achieved through a strong TEAM spirit.  Very much like the shipping industry, the Volvo Ocean Race is about performance on a global arena and this is directly applicable to our customer's situation, who are also out there 24/7 under very tough conditions.  We will do our absolute best to support Ken Read and his talented crew in their efforts to be the fastest around the world."

Team selection efforts are already underway and will likely include a number of sailors from PUMA’s 2008-2009 team, plus a mix of new and veteran talent from the professional racing world.  Training will begin onboard PUMA’s il mostro in Spring 2010 at the team’s homebase in Newport, Rhode Island.

Skipper Ken Read, considered to be one of the world’s most accomplished racers, was in charge of PUMA Ocean Racing and at the helm of PUMA’s il mostro throughout the entire Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009.  The U.S.-born Read has twice helmed America’s Cup programs in 2000 and 2003 and was named “United States Rolex Yachtsman of the Year” twice and has 46 World, North American and National Championships to his credit.

“This last race was an amazing journey for me personally and for our start-up company PUMA Ocean Racing,” said Ken Read.  “To have the opportunity to continue where we left off is a dream come true.  For PUMA to want to come back to this adventure is a testament to the event itself and to the entire PUMA Ocean Racing team past and present. We look forward to the challenges that lie ahead both organizationally as well as competitively.”

PUMA is committed to working across the globe in sustainable, creative and innovative ways to lessen the impact on the environment and to give back what it takes from the planet by seeking to reduce its carbon footprint in all areas of business.  The sportlifestyle brand’s entry into the Volvo Ocean Race is compatible with this mission, as sailing is considered a ‘clean sport’, using only the wind to harness the power needed to race across the world over the course of nine months.

The entry into competitive sailing extends PUMA’s focus into premium lifestyle sports – a category PUMA has forged through its Formula 1 partnerships and other Motorsports collaborations such as Ducati and Ferrari, and the launch of a sportlifestyle Golf collection in 2006.

Design award
Design award

Hareide Designmill receives an award for design excellence at the Red Dot Awards for their outstanding work on the Berg Propulsion BRC 800 panel.

BRC 800 wins highest design award in the red dot design award

With its excellent and innovative design, the BRC 800 by Hareide Designmill has succeeded in one of the most renowned and hardest international design competitions. In the red dot award: product design 2009 the top-class jury awarded the “red dot: best of the best” for highest design quality only 49 times among the 3,231 submitted products. According to the judgement of the jury, BRC 800 is among these 49 pioneering design products. The festive awards presentation with more than 1,000 guests will take place in the Essen Opera House, the Aalto Theatre, on 29 June 2009.

“Successful products are in so far different from less successful products that they can survive in the real world,” explains design expert Professor Dr. Peter Zec, initiator of the red dot design award. “Successful participation in a design competition can already be an initial sign of a product’s later commercial success, because these competitions allow an objectification of otherwise often very subjective design decisions.” Receiving an award in an internationally renowned design competition such as the red dot design award was therefore an important indicator whether a product had the potential to succeed internationally.

Products submitted to the red dot design award are assessed by an international jury consisting of renowned design experts. They examine and test the products and assess them according to criteria such as degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, longevity, ecological compatibility and clarity of function. This year companies from 49 countries with a total of 3,231 products faced the judgement of the jury.

Berg Propulsion is pleased to announce its sponsorship of the Green Dragon Racing Team in the Volvo Ocean Race.

GREEN DRAGON ANNOUNCE NEW PARTNER SPONSOR

6th February, 2009

The Green Dragon Racing Team is pleased to announce it has secured further funding for its Volvo Ocean Race campaign. Following the exchange of contracts today in Qingdao, Berg Propulsion joins Green Dragon as a supporting partner alongside a Chinese syndicate made up of three companies; Shandong Lingong, Weichai Power and Triangle Group. Discoverireland.com is also a partner sponsor and is promoting Ireland as a tourism destination through their participation in the Volvo Ocean Race.

At today’s announcement in Qingdao, Berg Propulsion CEO Aloysius Hendricks stated, “We are proud to announce our partnership with the Green Dragon, an unique Chinese and Irish collaboration representing for us a collaboration between Europe and Asia. At Berg Propulsion, we feel a strong connection to Green Dragon as we also have European roots combined with a strong Asian influence. This influence is particularly evident in China where we have seen our business grow steadily.”

For Berg Propulsion the sponsorship of this campaign was a natural fit, Green Dragon reflects Berg Propulsion’s values: a global perspective and reach, an emphasis on quality and reliability and a desire for excellence. The Green Dragon Racing Team is a unique Chinese and Irish collaboration. The build of the boat was funded by a syndicate of private Irish investors, and the team already holds strong Chinese links with construction of the boat by a team of 90 Chinese boat builders at McConaghy Boats in Zhuhai, and is the first Volvo Open 70 boat to be built in China. Berg Propulsion is no stranger to doing business in China, it has an extensive sales, marketing and service office located in Shanghai. Berg Propulsion has enjoyed a large volume of sales in China and a number of its key Asian customers are based here. “Berg  Propulsion is a global organization and we have real synergies with the Green Dragon team. We will join our customers and partners at seven of the remaining stopovers and we look forward to hosting the Dragon at our home port of Marstand in June,” Berg Propulsion chairman Hakan Svensson.

Green Dragon is delighted to welcome Berg Propulsion as a supporting partner to the team, Green Dragon CEO Jamie Boag commented, “We are very excited to join forces with Berg Propulsion. The next five months are going to be challenging both on and off the water, we feel a genuine connection to the team at Berg Propulsion and we are looking forward to continuing this journey together”.

After 4 legs, Green Dragon is currently laying fourth overall with 27.5 points. The team recently completed a punishing 14-day leg from Singapore in which they were the only boat to affect major structural repairs whilst at sea and still complete the leg. Green Dragon will compete in the In Port race tomorrow in Qingdao. The action kicks off at 1300 local time (GMT + 8) with just four boats taking to the waters off Qingdao.
